Ralph,

What if you can have both, CAD and manual ISO's (This can easily be draw to an electroinc "Not to Scale" ISO) and then have a way to link the ISO to the CAD model for updating automatically. REBIS has the capability to update the CAD model from the ISO. I worked in pipe stress and what we can do today in 10 minutes used to take all day!!! The Rebis ISO program can also back feed the stress module, AutoPIPE, to run the analysis. Since plants manage their operations essentially from ISO's and the 3D model is essentially out of date the minute one field change takes place, this is a powerful capability.

Ive work in the nuclear power plant and the hydrocarbon processing industries since 1976 and have seen the growth of the CAD and the use of the T-squares and trriangles to produce a pipe spool drawing.

Today its very difficult to conduct business in process or power piping (B31.1, B31.3 and the CFR 1910 users) without resorting to the use of the PDS and EDMS most specially if your ISO9000 certified because of documenation and traceability requirement. People who are good in PDS are really good in conceptualizing the whole piping. Once the CAD is done it goes to the pipe stress analyst and modification is a breeze at the design stage.

But out there in the field during installation and fabrication nothing beats a manually drawn iso's using the board and the parallel rule. Its quick and get the job done.

What im saying is you still need both to conduct your business. We're using the PDS/EDMS/Algor/Caesar II/SAP to manage our business dealing with piping for capital porjects and using the manual drawing for mdoification, as-built documentation and repairs At the end of the day, the manual drawing has to be digitized so it can be included in the database file.
