Armstrong and Spirax Sarco both have selection software for steam traps. I suggest it would be available from their web sites. Spirax also have good handbooks on the topic. Of course the classic text book is "The Efficient Use of Steam" by Oliver Lyle.

Personally I would always use a float or inverted bucket steam trap on a heat exchanger.

Subject: [PipingDesign] A question

  Dear friends,

Can anyone help me in selecting a particular model of Steam Trap from a vendor- Let us assume that it is for a heat exchanges, with modulating control valve, so that the choice has narrowed down to Float & Thermostatic steam trap. Using the differential pressure and the condensate sizing load, and with a given MOC, there are a series of models satisfying the selection criteria, how do I finally settle on a particular Steam Trap? (For simplicity I assume that connection is NPT).
