All factors need to be considered. just as with all designers and engineers
that don't know everything , craft people are in the same boat. But all want
to extol that they are the authority. It is the responsibility of designers
and engineers to sort through the info collected and come to a design that
will meet functional and theoretical requirements.
Discussions have been in ref to union craftsman that have gone through a
complete apprenticeship and are trained in sketching and engineering
principles. I concur that these people are making excellent designers
especially after they have learned conceptual design. Take note that with
the increased use of open shop, the quantity of fitters that understand
engineering is getting slim. Many times the foreman is the only person on a
crew that can read a plan drawing or come close to pulling off an iso.
Always take care in using the other guys idea in your design.

Subject: Re: [PipingDesign] Piping Erection
I have to say, as a relative newbie in the design field, the guys that
REALLY
know anything about it are the guys who build it. I have a lot of respect
for the fab guys and if a fab guy came along and told me "THIS is how it's
done" I would sit up and take notice any day. I mean, it's one thing to
talk
about theory and what SHOULD work, but it's a whole different ball park to
talk about what DOES work.
