Head is independent of SG. Flow is independent of SG however a lower SG infers a lower viscosity which will affect the system head loss. Power will be reduced by a lower SG for the same flow. Their is some softawre available from the pump manufacturers such as ABS & ITT Flygt that will enable you to vary the pr=arameters and you can see for yourself the effects of changes to this variable.

Suggest you get hold of the Crane technical bulletin M410 (Crane Valves). This has all the information you require to understand the subject. Try their web page. Also look at www.pump-zone.com for some excellent articles on pumps.

Subject: [PipingDesign] pump problem

Can anyone explain me " What will be the effect of specific gravity on pump characteristics ( i.e. head, flow and power )? " .

I have pump which will operate with the liquid of lower specfic gravity than design liquid. So what will be the effect on pump head, flow and power? Whether pump will deliver same head and flow as per original design or not. Pl explain me.
If anyone know the links for pump design & its fundamentals then pl let me know.
Thanks in advance
Hitesh
