Overcoming the "Metal Mindset" in FRP Pipe Design ChemicalProcessing.com

<<Nonmetallic piping systems often replace metallic piping systems
that have failed because of internal or external corrosion. Nonmetallic system design generally parallels the process used in metallic pipe design, but there are differences. Unfortunately, most of the design criteria specified for nonmetallic piping systems are based on a "metal mindset," especially when the design concerns retrofit or replacement piping systems. Various software packages address stress analysis of piping systems, based on physical properties and geometry. However, these packages calculate only the general effects of longitudinal beam bending, not the local stresses at supports. Local bending stresses are caused by support reaction loads on fiberglass piping systems. Determinations of these stresses largely have been avoided because of the calculation difficulty involved. Engineers have built in a "comfort factor" by installing systems according to manufacturers' published data such as span charts and installation details, and by using generally recognized support methods such as clevis pipe hangers and pipe shoes with encirclement saddles. However, this comfort factor cannot be substantiated by any data relative to the particular system as installed.>>

Polyurethane Components for Pipe Supports Piping Technology and Products

<<The combination of strength to support loads and thermal
insulation made rigid polyurethane foam an attractive material for the cryogenic pipe supports required for major LNG facilities constructed in the 1970's.>> Received on Wed Aug 08 22:27:00 2001
