Hello,

B31.1 for example gives a basic allowable stress, for pressure and it is S for our discussion. For stress due to thermal expansion, the code allowable value is:
1.5 * S.
The total allowable stress due to pressure and sustain laod and thermal is: S+1.5*S=2.5 * S
For sustain and pressure, Plus wind or eartwake load for a short time, The allowable stress due to B31.1 is 1.2 * s and for B31.3 it is
1.33 * S.

In addition, it is permitted to add the unused stress due to pressure to the thermal stress allowable.
