See embedded remarks.
For detailed questions about a particular product, I think we should take this off line and not bore the rest of the group.

Hi Peter and Bossie ,

I completely agree with you .When we are talking of querying the 3D objects apart from the linenos (if ur modelling setting is as layer by linenos) the NB of the piping element , piping class , centreline elevation etc should also be available. I did explore the CADLINK switch in the configuration set-up but was latter told that it is not relevant for the newer versions. Here is my wishlist

1)Toggle insulation in Explorer ID.
PQ> I have seen this on the enhancement list for future versions. The only good way to do this is to use AutoCAD layers. We are looking into putting the insulation on a different layer than the piping. This has it's own effects that we need to consider.

2)Query Elevation , Piping Class and Sizes. PQ> You can do this now, but it's not very convenient. The elevation is always in the AutoCAD units (mm or inch, typically) which doesn't help much. All the database information can be viewed using the right mouse click properties. However, you must keep the database file along with the NWD file as it is reading this data from the original database, not copying it to the NWD.

3)To see the reserved space for tube removal. PQ> Again, you could do this today, and we have modified one of the exchanger scripts to do this. However, there is the same problem with the insulation. It is either on or off and can't be changed from within Explorer. When we solve the insulation issue, this should be resolved as well.

4)I would like to measure distances from specific points of an object.Say the outside of the vessel to the centreline of the pipe. Please note when I measure the distance between two vessels of diameter in excess of 2000 mm.I really do not know where my measurement is from.Where is the object being snapped?. Is it centre of the vessel or outside face of vessel or is it the tanline.
PQ> Yes, you need to have proper snap points. You may find that the version released recently is improved, but it still needs to be able to snap and measure from centers of circles, etc.

I have used PDMS previously wherein the concept of Plines and Ppoints are used to tackle these problems.
5)Clash Check: The first time I did this my gaskets were clashing against bolts.Maybe I did not do my homework but finding the right setting using trial and error is a time consuming one.A tutorial form piping point of view would be helpfull.

As of now it seems using Explorer ID is a presentation tool where you can admire the 3D model.I would be looking forward to use it as an design tool. But these I presume are teething problems.Once the software is customized to meet Plant Design needs it will be a boon.

Peter

As a user of Rebis explorer, I find it facinating that you state that this add-on can read the database with regard to components. How is this possible
when the *.nwd file only reads the graphics and totally ignores the database, or have I been doing it wrong throughout my model review preparations.

I just find it hard to see how Navis could tug along a +- 20 meg database (Access on top of it !). When it already has a reasonably heavy task throwing out the graphics.

By the way... I find difficuly in actually getting an accurate measurement using the "divider tool" eg. between a fitting and grade. How should this tool be used optimally?.

I'll appreciate your comments.

Regards
Bossie Boswell

based on the Navisworks technology. In addition to the great navigation capabilities with a standard AutoCAD model, it has the advantage to be able to read AutoPLANT databases to get details on specific piping components.
