Refernce: Machinery Reliability Assessment by H. Bloch
Chapter 23 page 310 from an article contributed by Bill Moustakakis Ph D.
Centrifugal Compressor
The inlet line of centrifugal compressor is designed with a minimum od
3Xdia of straight run between the inlet nozzle and the first elbow.
Pumps
Because turbulent flow through valves may advsersely affect pump
reliability, prudnce requires valves to be located a sufficient distance
from the suction nozzle. This is especially important where double-flow
pumps are concerned. Similarly, elbows should be located at least 5Xdia away
from the pump suction nozzle.
There are an illustration in the book showing what happened if the 1st elbow is very close the the equipment nozzle.
