RE: compressed air vs. screwed pipe

From: <Bruce>

My understanding was the customer wanted screwed piping. Given my 'druthers', and depending on pressure and location, I'd use either PVC or copper. If it's outdoors, I'd never use polymeric lines - the UV is ruthless. If it's higher pressure (50 psig/> ~ 3 bar) I'd be apprehensive about using milk tube or most polymerics. Copper is very easy to run, holds up forever outdoors, and pressure is no problem.

RE this particular threaded run, because of the moisture problem, I install all take-offs from the top of the pipe, throw in drain lines, etc. If it's going outdoors in a colder area, be very careful, regardless if material, to communicate the problems associated with freezing of condensate in their devices or lines. I've seen the problem rsult in costly shutdowns even in the Los Angeles area, Arizona, and the Maritime Alps (sometimes it's worse there, because usually everyone thinks about that in northern climates).

We find it is just as economcal to use 316ss milk tube, polyethylene or ABS for air reticulation. O fcourse this solves the problem of corrosion.

I would think screwed piping/fittings are find, but would suggest looking at
using galvanized matreials. A lot of air systems have quite a bit of
condensed water in them and galvanized materials would alleviate the problem
of rusting and having particles collecting in your instrumentation items.

> yes.
> not sure if their would be a difference between
the main dist. loop and
the
> branch feed lines.
> are you planning to use screwed on the branch
lines as well?
> you never be any better than the material and
type on the screwed branch
> lines.

screwed pipe
>
>
> Hi, folks
>
> I have a quick and easy question. We are
planning a small retrofit
> of a compressed air blow-down system and the
customer would like to
> use screwed (NPT) pipe for a distribution
line. If he uses 3"NPT for
> the distribution loop, would he be in compliance
with ASME?
>
> Thanx
