Paul, may I suggest that the first and third paragraphs of your note be included in a confirmation message sent to all new subscribers? That was everyone is told (obviously no guarantee that they can or will read it), and it might reduce the number of poorly defined, extremely general questions.

In my estimation, the term "piping design" encompasses engineers, designers, CAD guys, field guys and fab/install people.

Let's try to remember that there are 360+ people subscribed, and not all are experts.

For the newcomers to the field (and this list) try to do some basic web research before asking here. After doing so, feel free to ask about info you might have found and please be as specific as you can - asking a question without any details doesn't help anyone to help you. Just because you don't get an answer doesn't mean nobody cares about your query, people on this list tend to be busy with their own jobs and if a question like, "can someone tell me what a raised-face flange is" clearly indicates that no homework has been done prior to asking.

[Subtle hint: search PipingDesign.com and visit the linked articles/websites before asking - there are hundreds of good ones]

As far as pompous asses go, let's all also remember that it's relatively easy to fire off a nasty email message if one is having a bad day...

I am reminded that this is the time of year when school starts (anyone familiar with usenet knows what I mean) and maybe http://www.urban75.com/Mag/troll.html might be a worthwhile reading exercise.
