The term "figure 8" is often used for a "spectacle blind", which is basically a flat ( +- 6-15mm thick) plate, which is cut in the shape of an 8 i.e. an "open" half (which has a hole in it and looks like a gasket) and a "closed " end with no hole. These two circles are joined to one another by a short bridge which makes it resembling an 8 or a pair of spectacles O-O. When clamped between eg a flange and valve, it could be inseterted so as to block the downstream line, or swung to still be in place but the line would be open.

A paddle flange is simply the blocking side of the 8 described above with no open end to it. The bridge is still there and the total looks like a paddle -O.
