I cannot agree that it is a question of size whether to use a fig 8 or
paddle, although the bulkiness of a fig 8 is a constraint as stated.
My feeling is that a piper will need to include the dimension of the fig 8 into his initial design because on high pressure lines the thickness of the paddle would cause severe stress on the bolted up flanges when this is removed.
Furthermore the "visually" of whether the line downstream is isolated or not is an immense asset.
Also, if the line is of an exotic material eg Chrome/moly or 321, the correct component is readilly on hand and don't forget it's correct for the pressure/temperature.
Finally., with a fig 8, the rigger has no problem attatching his slings (the "bridge" provides a non slip area) Received on Sat Oct 13 08:53:00 2001
