Derek,

I agree with you. But how will you come to know, when the pipe is overstressed?
During heavy rains, the rate of settlement may be more.

Satish, I agree with Ralph, but would add, depending on the configuration of the pipework .... I am assumming the pipework is above grade. A vertical flanged sacrificial spool piece could be incorporated into the piping system. When/if the pipework is over stressed due to the settlement a new length of flanged spool piece can be inserted to account for the settlement.
