RE: Commissioning Activities

Some power stations in Australia have moved away from using gaseous chlorine to a Nalco bioscide. Apparently it is purely cost driven rather than a safety issue. Perhaps you can pursue this as an option. --- Ahmed Vawda <avawda@aksugar.co.ae> wrote:

Hello Rakesh

You are quite correct. Dosing them separately would be fine, but note the
ffg conditions.

I am not sure what state the chlorine is in, perhaps its liquid, (some big
systems use gas, got to take care here.)
If it is a liquid, usually sodium hypochlorite comes at a concentration of
12%. This is often dosed to obtain a residual in the cooling water circuit
of 0.2 - 0.5 PPM.
The H2So4 comes in conc. of max. 98%. I am not sure if you are obtaining a
98% or a diluted form.
In any event, if both chemicals are added separately, and all care
engineered that they do not mix in their "supplied" state, it should be
perfectly acceptable.

I used to use hydrochloric acid in my swimming pool to get the pH below 7.8.
The pool always had a minimum chlorine residual of 0.2 PPM. Its quite safe.
One could drink it if one liked.
Dear Mr Ahmed Vawda,

As you have mentioned that mixing of chlorine and H2So4 is not advisable for
system, then what should be done if the pH value of water goes beyond the
desirable reqmnt of system and at same time chlorine percentage get reduced
in the system?

As per reqmnt we have to reduce the pH by dosing H2So4 Acid in water and at
same time we may require to maintain the percentage of Chlorine in water to
restrict the biological growth in water. But while dosing both in water if
one dose them separately then there should not be any harm. if it is harmful
then what should be the solution for it?
Pls suggest.
