When you say not on rack, I presume the pipes are on some kind of trapeze
hangers (if individually supported,
it doesn't matter anyhow). Based on my experience, especially if you have
different tube/pipe sizes or reducing sizes,
it's better to maintain bop elevation(assuming you are not insulating at
hanger points) or bottom of insulation or
bottom of insulation shields/boards/shoes when insulation has to be
continuous.
