RE: Fouling of Pipes

Anther novel method for removing gypsum scale in an alumina plant was as follows.

The pipe system was replaced in ABS (to AS 3518 by Tyco details at www.eurapipe.com.au) a thermoplastic pipe material. this is manufactured in England, Asutralia, Malaysia and Indonesia. NOT the American stuff that is used for waste, sewers, drains and vents but pressure pipe.

The operator would hit the pipe every morning with a sledge hammer. Hey presto the scale fell off.

Eurapipe have employed ABS in the sugar industry however I am unsure if it was for the raw sugar lines. certainly temperatures were up at 70 C. Of course at this temperature such rubber reinforced plastics require continual support. As ABS expands at 10 imes that of carbon steel you could get the same effect as you flame treatment by running hot then cold water through the pipes. --- Ahmed Vawda <avawda@aksugar.co.ae> wrote:
