Subject: [PipingDesign] Piping Queries - II

bypass what? the control valve station - basic function is to control/throttle flow in response to a signal. why bypass it? probably to repair, overhaul or bench test. to keep production going, the control vbalve is bypass. Gate valve does a bad job of throttling the line.

2. Why do we provide Rod on the sleeper/rack for simple resting support? You can not install a rod hanger on a sleeper (really you can't). Basically, the pipe (welded on a pipe shoe/saddle) is just resting on the pipe rack (again no rod). However on some plant it is allowed to support a small bore pipe (sometimes conduit too) using the large bore pipe via a rod/clamp hanger system.

3. How to decide the thickness and type of insulation as well as insulating material based on service and the temp of line?

look up your line designation table (ldt). there's a column there for the insulation (its either for PP, heat conservation or noise reduction). If ldt is not available, you can also find it in your insulation spec (normally divided into hot and cold). Normally a table is attached showing the type of insualtion and thickness reqd based on the pipe dia and the temp. if you dont have both the spec and the ldt, then you may download a free software on the internet on how to figure the most optimum insulation for your application. its good ive tried it. its really no big deal, you can just develop a excel routine using basic heat transfer from perry's handbook. lots of very good article from chemical engineering mags (archives available on line).

4. I want to know about the Acid Proof Tiling which is required in Acid related areas. Can you please throw some light on it?

technology has evolved - my preference is the use of high performance coating over acid-proof tiles. its quick to apply, reliable and cost-effective too.

Waiting for your replies.

rakesh
