I suspect that there will be an increase in frictional force as the contact pressure goes up and the tendency to brinnel the surfaces increases. And there may be additional wear. But if you'v ebeen getting satisfactory service using a rod, that's all that matters. And if you do have wear problems you can probably go to a rectangular bar without there being much on a problem with water retention.
