Hi,

The first resting support is given mainly for two reasons: 1. To support the weight of the piping with runs along the column height. 2. To reduce the forces and moments on the column nozzle.

Though in practice, the support will be inactive in operating condition, it is designed to carry the sustained load (weight) of the piping.
