Well said Steve,

While we should guard against incursions of irrelevant topics, I too don't see any harm if members involve in fringe topics. If we already know, we may help the lesser mortals (lesser in a particular job knowledge area) or if we find annoying, we may simply avoid instead of trying to humiliate someone.

Many of us may get to know many things from these simple but sometimes irrelevant questions as long as they help in knowledge enhancement.

Whats so hard about replying to the odd off-topic question? If I dont know, or I dont like the question, I dont answer it. I think fire protection is a fringe topic in relation to piping design, and have no problem in trying to assist.

I fully understand. In this world of downsizing, re engineering of businesses
and lay-offs fewer and fewer are left to do more in the western world. In countries where the cost of engineering resources are not nearly as high they
are yet to suffer from this evil that causes so much frustration.

May I suggest that purely commercial enquiries by members of the Forum are investigated first using tools such as Google searches of the Net and then followed up with manufacturers. Only if that fails ask the members for help.

We need to assist the inexperienced coming into our profession but not to overcome their shyness in asking their colleagues first when they dont know.
The Forum is not a substitute for humility in the face of ignorance.

There have been may issues discussed that I have found informative and enjoyed
watching develop, as well as participate in the forum.  But, much of what
I have been seeing are questions that a high school freshman should know the
answer to or he would have enough sense to research the issue. Questions that
are placed by people representing themselves as responsible decision making parties in the process piping industries.
