In some cases, some links will work OK at first attempt. Xenu's link checker on a DSL connection can hammer a server pretty hard if said server hosts more than one linked page. Running Xenu effectively pings dozens of sites/pages simultaneously, and some servers don't like this. Also, pages that want to feed you cookies might deny automated link-checking and return an error message.

"Timeouts" can usually be resolved. "Not Founds" usually require some Google digging. "No Such Host" may mean that the domain is dead.
