Steve,

I see it as a way of giving back rather than what they can do for me. I represent them on standards committees and work with them in schools advising those who want a career in engineering as to the opportunities.

They do have many technical forums and I attend lectures whenever they cover the topics that I am interested in. Conferences are excellent when I cna attend.

All have websites which are valuable just for the links to other sites if nothing else. I E Aust represents engineers in general to the government. At the moment the thrust is to limit liability because of the insurance debacle here. Withoput memebers paying fees there would be no body as such to represent us.

The magazines arent that exciting technically but now and again something pops up that is of interest.

I find you get more out of these bodies if you participate instead of sitting back and weaiting for the crumbs to drop off the table. I have met a tremendous number of people through my dealings and sometimes I even get work out of it.
