Hi All
I noticed several web references state that IS1239 is equivalent to BS1387.
Some (old) information I have from a (reputable) vendor for BS1387 pipe is as follows:
Sulphur: 0.06% max
Phosphorus: 0.06% max
Tensile strength: 21-30 tonf/in^2 (33-47 kg/mm^2)
Minimum elongation on gauge length of 5.65*(So)^0.5 : 20%
"So" is the original cross-sectional area of test piece.
May be useful as a back check.
BS 1387 pipe is used in low duty applications such as general service water, compressed air etc.
Cheers
Steve McKenzie

Dear Adil,
IS 1239 pipes are usually made from structural grade steel (IS 2062) and that's the place to look for chemical composition. Although there's a small para about Chemical Composition in IS 1239, it covers only the cap (max limit) on harmful impurities (Sulphur and Phosphorous) and reference (IS 228, I think) to method for establishing Composition.
Other useful references could be IS 3589 (used in same pipe specs for sizes 8" and higher) and IS 2528 for tensile, yield and allowable stress values.
I would invite other forum members to react.
Mahavir
