practice is there but not accepted universally, some companies allow, some
will not..... fact is that it works and simplify supporting.......... i
have
never come across any failure..... for critical lines (hot lines), as long
as anylysis is perfect and welding is correct...... there seems to be no
problem....... for cold lines there is at all no problem....
the only exception which i can think off. is if
the line is cut in
future for maintenance and same elbows have to be used and support location
changes......here again, i say, use the same elbow and prepare the support
at other location.....
in fact, i am also into this controversial
discussion......... but
to avoid problems..... at the moment not using supports at the elbow......
may be others are able to put more light on this
issue.........

Subject: [PipingDesign] Trunnion on an Elbow
Importance: High
Dear members,
Whether welding a trunnion on an elbow & using it as a support is
accepted
practice universally ? Infact, I have used it numerous times in many
projects.
But I am met with a stiff resistance for one of our on-going projects. Result is, supporting becomes tedious.
Request all put in their views & any bad experiences of resulting
failures
...
Thanks,
Shreedhar.
