If the pipe was above gorund would you put a thrust block in? i take the point made by one forum member that if there is an uplift force from thermal strain one may want to anchor the pipe below ground using mass concrete but this is rarely done as it makes maintenance difficult.

One common mistake made with welded pipelines is a failure to recognise that the thrust from the pressure componenet is taken in the wall of the pipe and manifests itself as longitudinal stress. I find structural engineers are usually bewilded by this and want to restrain a force of pressure times area. In fact this is only required where you have rubber ring joints as for ductile iron pipe or unrestrained bellows, sliding joints etc.

If you have such a pipe system than companies such as tyco water have software that you can download for the design of thrust blocks.

Your messsages to date havent described in detail what your pipeline material is and still I fail to see why you need thrust blocks.

Actually there is a caculation which gives us the requirement of thrust block for underground piping at bend. Such bends can be 90 deg or less than 90 degree in underground piping.
