In our experience several things need to be verified:

  1. Pressure rating. Axial pressure thrust on the coupling will often comprise your largest axial load.
  2. The configuration you've described is typically installed to absorb lateral thermal or other movements from the discharge piping running horizontally. You should be sure that the amount of horizontal movent at the upper elbow is not extensive for the "universal" coupling configuration you are employing.
