Slurry distribution manifolds at dam crest

I have to design distribution manifolds for slurry dispersion/discharge at some tails dams. In the past I have designed from first principles using Durand and massive spreadsheets. Results have been mixed and the operators can normally make them work better than my predictions.
Can anyone refer me to any papers/websites/graffiti which may simplify and improve my current design procedures? The manifolds I design consist of a header pipe with small diameter tee branch discharges about every 20m or so. The branches are fitted with valves to enable the solids deposition to be regulated. The manifolds I deal with are typically 300m to 2000m long.
