Christopher,

Thanks for that. Book is available from DA Books in Melbourne for AUD 60 if any one else is interested.

>I have been searching for a book on dynamics that has a strong content on
>piping design. Can you suggest any as I have been only able to find general
>texts more related to structures?
For overall stress issues a piping system is substantially just a framework, and any book on structural dynamics will do the job, provided it's heavy on first principles. The very best practical book I've ever found on the topic is _Structural Dynamics for the Practising Engineer_ by H. M. Irvine--one of yours who teaches in Sydney at the University of New South Wales. I got my copy second hand over here, and I suspect there are plenty around. Irvine really does a fine job acquainting the reader with general methodology. For a general reference in the topic, Timoshenko's book on Structural Vibrations is a good one.

Much of the trick is getting yourself used to a little different way of thinking about structures and getting familiar with the meaning of modal response and dynamic loading. It can get mathemathical real fast and it doesn't seem as intuitive as static loading until you get into how dynamic loads develop. Irvine's book bridges the gap nicely and the examples mean something. Once you understand the basics of dynamic loading, you'll find the rest of the structural response isn't much different that externally applied static load assessment. If you're into seismic analysis, get hold of _Nuclear Reactors and Earthquakes_ put out by the AEC in the 60's. It's a solid reference on all aspects of seismic analysis and will help with learning first principles. You should still be able to get it from the US National Trechnical Information Service as report TID-7024. It's old and it may take some e-mailing to track down,

but it's well worth it.

Once you get into the details, it doesn't vary much from ordinary piping practice, except that lateral loading comes into play. Mc/I means the same thing for static and dynamic loads.
