Piping design - Pig Launchers & receivers

Hi everybody,

I'm working in doing a detail piping for launchers and receivers that can handle intelligent pigs. I've referred some existing arrangements taht are provided with removable spool piece immediately after the launchers. (In certain cases the same has not been provided). Is it a must to provide these spool piece? if so what is the reason? Is it that it is not required where intelligent pigs are not used?

It will be great if somebody can throw some light on critcal points to be considered in the pig launcher/receiver piping.
