Bending stress of 2300psi refers to the beam and not to the pipe. I believe
this figure is a very conservative figure considered so that beam can be
assumed to be very 'stiff'. Higher values of bending stress in the beam will
increase the deflection of the beam itself; thereby increasing the stresses
on the pipe which are supported by that beam.
Does it make sense?

Does anybody know why B31.3 specifies (Table 121.5, General Note C) the bending stress does not to exceed 2300 psi (15.86 MPa)
I beleive the 2300 psi is the allowable stress at 400 degrees C divided by 4, A106 grade A. I could understand it being divided by 2 (PD/2t), but am at a loss to explain the division by 4.
Can anyone set me straight.
