Re: Hot Sustained Stress Check

Dear Rajesh,

I think, small lift off can be allowed in the piping stress analysis. Because, as such, even the pipe would be sagging in the operating condition, it will sag and sit on the support, thereby making the support active and not increasing the bending stress further.

Now what should be this value? It all depends on the sustained stresses and how much margin you have at that point to the allowable. If there is sufficient margin, then I would say you can restrict it to the fabrication tolerance, which is generally 3mm.

But, like the decision of umpire in cricket, it all depends on your client's understanding & decision !!!

Generally Hot sustained stress is carried out by removing the support at the point of lift off ,& check for sustained stresses. My question is :-
Is there any guide lines or any proper basis available for neglecting small lift off for hot sustained stress check. If small lift off is allowed to be neglected ,then what should be the value ??

Regards,
Rajesh Balapure.
