RE: AutoCAD 2004

Dear Members,

I am sure that this is not again the right forum to discuss softwares that too not directly related to our group; but then I request if somebody shares a critique of the Primavera Software, used for Project Management. There are never versions of the earlier Primavera Project Planner (P3) being rolled out. They are Primavera Enterprise/ Expedition etc. with web-enabled features etc and a lot of GUI features.

Regards,

Iqbal J

The real question is whether the cost of the upgrade (CAD software, OS and associated software upgrades required for compatibility and hardware), the additional learning curve (include that of all system changes including down time) and backwards compatibility issues will balance any additional productivity you may realize.

Vertical software markets, which includes most engineering software, operate under the presumption that the only way to make money is to offer continuous upgrades for a fat charge. Ideally you get continuous improvement and bug fixes, but usually the rush to meet shipping deadlines means Q/A suffers. Consequently promised features may not work and bugs may not get fixed.

If there is some feature that you truly need or a bug in your present softwarethat costs you time and money, that's a reason for upgrading _provided_ the feature actually works or the bug is actually fixed. Another reason for upgrading may be a request by a client, but you have to balance the value of the client's business against the cost of the upgrade or that of arriving at a mutually agreeable workaround. Promises of whizzy action and instant productivity gains or 100% ROI by the developer are never a reason. Think long and hard about promises of faster program execution. It's annoying to wait around for screen refreshes, but sorting through a whole new list of features that don't work or waiting around for system upgrades is what kills project schedules.
