What is superficial? I don't usually think of superficial corrosion as
requiring grit blasting, although you could do it provided you don't
remove any more than just the corrosion. If you're sloppy about the work,
though, you could remove a helluva lot more than that.
Get some info on the vessel and see if it has a corrosion allowance specified. That will tell you what the absolute minimum wall thickness can be. Then when you're done with the work you can check to see that you haven't removed too much. If you don't have any info on the vessel you should do the calculations to determine how thick the vessel needs to be. Reproducing the design calculations won't be easy without design drawings and material call-outs, but that's what you need. If it's an ASME Code vessel, you can get the manufacturer and the registration number from the code plate. (If it's not a Code vessel either ASME or BS or the equivalent, I'd scrap it. Roll-your-own pressure vessel construction is dangerous.)
