I did have occasions when I had to orient myself with the magnetic compass on my watch, on site surveys, having to relate drawings between facilities. It is then that I wondered whether compasses were made with offset corrected to point in the true north direction. Now I know that the magnetic north varies and compasses are'nt made that way.

I missed the connection. I'mn looking at a piping plan right now showing 'North' and 'called North.' 'North' probably means the direction indicated on surveyor's plats, which I think is true north, figured from magnetic north and the local variation. 'Called north' or 'plant north' is parallel to to one of the building walls and is used to orient equipment.
