It covers commodities such as adhesives and coatings/paints, as well as lab-type stuff, where ultrapure reagents are made, or custom blends, binders, solutions, etc. It's a very diverse field, where often cleanability and/or contamination control is crucial. Typically large multinational engineering companies don't get involved because the projects are smaller in scope or more difficult to get a good scope on up front. They are also less amenable to "proceduralizing", requiring specialists to do the work.

Are you referring to lab-type facilities? I'm not sure what specialty chem is.

Most of my experience is petrochem/pulp and paper/cryogenics so I don't know much about the highly-specialized fields.
