RE: Effect of friction.

Hi Pankaj Mandal

I write your whole name because I am uncertain of the correct form of address. Perhaps you could assist.

The structural engineer will need to consider both full friction load, no friction load, reverse loading (under cooling) and pay attention to fatigue. From the amount of discussion within this group about coefficients of friction on supports, it is obvious that it is a design case for pipe stress engineering. It should be equally so for the engineering on the other side of the pipe support.

Cheers

Steve

Dear members,

Please let me know if you consider effect of friction as permanent or temporary. Or in other words, should structural engineer consider frictional forces transmitted from piping (or pipe supports) to steel as a permanent force in their design.

I know there are many arguments against or in favour of above but I would like to know what is used in the industry. Hope this is not a proprietary information.

Regards,
Pankaj Mandal.
