hi,
The friction factors depends mainly on viscosity of fluid & surface roughness of pipe.for steam appln friction between pipe & fluid is not having any effect on flexibility also so it is not necessery to consider the friction between pipe & fluid to design the pipesupport upto 200NB. For designing supporting structure (for sliding base or guide horizontal) friction between roller & base plate must be considered. which can be taken as 25% of down ward load. Enough safety margin must be provided so that it can take the load if the nearby supports fail. In open penstock the friction between water & pipe plays a major role to decide the supports. which can be calculated as (4*f*l*v*v*)/(2*g*D) Regards,

Please let me know if you consider effect of friction as permanent or temporary. Or in other words, should structural engineer consider frictional forces transmitted from piping (or pipe supports) to steel as a permanent force in their design.

I know there are many arguments against or in favour of above but I would like to know what is used in the industry. Hope this is not a proprietary information.

Pankaj Mandal.
