This is the first one, since I perceive the issue to be very important
(especially since this is an email-based form of communication). Here are
some suggestions, based on my experience (without hypertext links, look them
up yourself - Google is your friend):

• Try Mailwasher, learn how it works. It is a free program
• If you can, at your mailserver, use Spamassasin
• Never open questionable emails, just delete them
• Run up-to-date anti-virus software
• Use a firewall
• Make sure your OS is up to date
• Learn how to use the built-in filters in your email program
• If you do not need to receive emails from unknown senders, create a
  whitelist
  
• Never respond to SPAM, even if it says "click here to be removed from our
  list"
