I want to know how effective is a support of this kind (pls. see attachment, to be uploaded by Paul later) in reducing the effect of friction. Sliding friction is known not to depend upon the area of contact but has only a direct relation to the normal reaction at the sliding interface.

Dear members,

Please let me know if you consider effect of friction as permanent or temporary. Or in other words, should structural engineer consider frictional forces transmitted from piping (or pipe supports) to steel as a permanent force in their design.

I know there are many arguments against or in favour of above but I would like to know what is used in the industry. Hope this is not a proprietary information.

Regards,
Pankaj Mandal.
