Good reply. But there are some technologies that are sort of almost free (in that the source is essentially inexhaustible [1]). Luckily, most of these need pumps and piping.
Of course, all this is moot if the planet gets smacked by an asteroid while Bruce Willis is busy on another movie shoot or if the glaciers melt due to global warming or if the magnetic poles shift while we're not looking.
