I am specifying expansion joints for a piping system. We are using STAAD III for the stress analysis. There is over 0.9 miles of 12" schedule 40 pipe supported at roughly 50 foot intervals. There are bends in the system, yet main anchors are not located at every bend, so lateral movement is of concern.
This is an expansion joint replacement project, and we want to avoid building anchors, and want to replace the existing EJ at their current locations.
How is the necessary lateral movement calculated?
Does anybody have any spreadsheets for this type of design?
Thank you,
