Steve:
Actually, you wouldn't even need the torpedos (talk to the Russians on the KIEV,
they're dangerous). Reinforce the conning tower and superstructure, and do an
emergency surface drill every now and then. If a whaler happens to be in the
wrong spot, how very unfortunate....
I'm just wondering about the comment of the subs being diesel - darn limited application there. Suppose you could use them as a training tool? Or dress up politicians and functionaries and let them be Captain Nemo? Or could one of the mega-theme parks be exploring a new venue?

If Canada has subs, then compared to us (NZ) it is a superpower.
Be assured the deal will be part of a back room contra. Are they actually
British or captured U boats?
Our defence policy is far more progressive; we have a few troops who keep
the peace, no combat planes, a little vintage armour, couple of frigates and
thats about it. For defence we bludge off larger countries like Australia
and US by hiding behind their skirts. We tried hiding behind the UN but they
keep trying to hide behind us, so we will have to stop that. However we have
just bought some APCs which supposedly dont do what is required - typical. I
wonder is we could swap some of our APCs for one of Canadas subs. We also
have a bit of a fisheries problem. I reckon a couple of torpedos in the side
of a poaching trawler would work wonders, and would give the diplomats
something to do.
Cheers
Steve

Sounds like someone up there has been taking lessons from our glorious
liters - get the country in the political and economic equivalent of a black
hole, and then come up with a search for weapons of mass distraction.
Actually, you might have a real need for those subs. You could have an all-weather patrol on the outer continental shelf for lobster, whale and codfish poachers. With the Mad Cow scares, and the Adkins diet getting people off eating grains, seafood could be a strategic resource!

Jumping ahead a few decades...
Canada just spent $750 Million on 4 used British diesel submarines - can
anyone tell me how this makes sense.
In my mind the submarine is an offensive weapon with very little
defensive capability.
Does anyone really look upon Canada as an offensive power?
Can anyone picture a scenario where a Canadian submarine fires a torpedo
or missile against anyone?
Would these subs have any kind of chance against their Russian, Chinese
or Rogue nation counterparts?
We do a good job as peacekeepers - this purchase really baffles me.
