I considered that possibility as well and you could be right. Due to the lack of detailed information (pipe size, rating, flange type and material, etc.) though, I figure the group's assumption was that this was someone who wasn't too sure/knowledgeable and needed some help.

Never heard of a lens flange before, good link! Too bad there are no further details of the matching flange there. The graphic seems to indicate a concave flange face and the description, "The spherical shape of this gasket is conical flange faces..." doesn't really explain much.

My assumption (and perhaps that of most of the rest of us) was that Lakshmi's question "Can anyone tell me what happened to this flange?" was a challenge, a test of sorts. He had a problem, investigated, figured it out, then decided to pass along his newfound knowledge to this discussion group. Perhaps that assumption was incorrect. Perhaps Lakshmi doesn't know what happened and is asking the group if we can help him figure it out. Just a theory...
