Its done.
A Canon S6300. Not as well featured as the HP1000 hardware-wise, but seems to work OK and doesnt lock up.
I wanted a Canon i6100, but there are none in town.

If you don't need colour, have you considered buying a refurbished HP-4MV. It's a 600dpi laser printer that can do 11"x17".
