Space for seal welding!
Of course. The major advantage.
I tried welding a spiro gasket band to a #900 flange once and it didnt work
out for some reason or other; probably the wrong stick. But with RTJs the
possibilities are endless.

Despite the comments re RTJ , and they are all valid, one of the big
advantages and a key reason
they are used in HI Press applications such as HP refinerys, (rareley
the LP
ones) is the inherent
rigidity and hence ability to carry high load once they are correctly
made
and installed.
"Every gnome has his day". The loads are generally always high because
the
reaction forces and bending
in High PresS situations is inevitably high. They resist leakage in
such
apps if
I tried to uplaod the skeyches of all the types mentioned from my course
notes.
It bounced so I guess Paul has to get away from the seven dwarfs and
come
home to Snow white (Barbara??)., or is it the other way round.

I generally avoid having anything to do with gnomes, dwarves, pixies and trolls, what Paul gets up to with miscellaneous PORGS is his own affair! I had better say no more unless I get put on to moderated status or, even worse, find myself appointed as a moderator...
We had some difficulty during an outage recently with a blank flange connection (RTJ) not sealing properly due to a small amount of corrosion in the groove of the WN flange, which led to the use of another advantage of the RTJ: there is enough room between the faces of the flanges to put in a seal weld between the ring and the flange faces. Of course, this dog's-breakfast of a joint does negate the easy joint parting benefits of a flange connection, but it did the job until the next outage.
Hey ho! Hey ho!
