I have heard of one compressor that always tripped on overtemperature
because the operators did not understand the effect of recirculation.
There was a by-pass around the compressor, and the operators incorrectly
believed that if the discharge temperature was high they had to increase
the by-pass. What they did not understand was that each time the gas
passes through the compressor it picked up energy so increased by-pass
aggravated the situation. The problem was solved by opening the by-pass
wide.
