In my experience there are (2) types of installation : Code & Non-code Piping.
1.) Code Piping, no point in discussing that, because there's no give on that.
2.) If the installation is non-code. e.g. process or industrial, although it is written on the specs as such,
we can usually get a variance from the specifications. The bid specifications are normally very general or
generic in nature, so what we normally do before starting a project is to submit a specific specifications
stating piping material, equipment manufacturer and method of fabrication and installation, highlighting all
variances from the bid specifications. Then the owner/client knows what he's getting and he can make a decision
on your proposal.
3.) On Non-code installation, we hardly have any problem selling our
saddle connections and this is our
normal shop practice :
a.) 90 degree saddle : Branch same size as mains, use full size tee; branch one size smaller than mains and below, use
a saddle connection.
b.) 45 degree (or any angle) saddle : Full size and smaller, use saddle connection.
<<<<<<<<By a comparison between direct pipe to pipe connection and
making use of fittings or self reinforced fittings for taking branch ,it
goes without saying that the quality and easiness of the job would be
much better in the latter case but regarding cost the former would be
cheaper. >>>>>>>>>>
From our experience, saddle connections gives you more flexibility in fabrication and installation and like you said is more economical and in addition more practical. We never want to buy additional fittings nor make any extra weld if we don't have to.
Hope this helps..........

Subject: [PipingDesign] Banching from pipes
Hi Everybody
I was wondering of a statement once I read in a Contract ,said that all
branch connections shall be made by fittings for all sizes and services.
I would like to know about your experiences and good practice regarding
this issue.
Is there any refrences or some general guidlines or some sample PMS's
available to refer to, regarding this issue ?
By a comparison between direct pipe to pipe connection and making use of
fittings or self reinforced fittings for taking branch ,it goes without
saying that the quality and easiness of the job would be much better in
the latter case but regarding cost the former would be cheaper.
Do you have any idea in this issue?
Cheers
A.R.Mani
