I had been thinking about glueing the unit to the back of my head, detaching the wiring to the screen and embedding the screen feed wires into my optic nerves. Your recommendation sounds far less painful.

The "ruggedized" ones seem to be very pricey, so if you search around you should be able to find cases and protectors for the regular ones that will survive the drop test. Or just go semi-cyberman and hack together some velcro and duct tape and attach the thing to your forearm.
