Hi
One should not substract the external pressure from internal pressure. The external pressre in case burried pipes also acts in case when there us no internal pressure. Extenal pressure and Internla pressure both leads to stress but they are not in opposite direction. It is always good to calculate resultatnt pronciple stress.
Use Max shear stress theoty in case of stell pipes. Extra care is required in case of burried pipes as buried pipes are also subjected to dynamic loads due to vehicle movement. Design procedures are avalable for burried pipes. Please refer them Rahul
