I would suggest a really heavy based grease or wax type coating, which would be applied hot. Our tool room used to have a hot dip bath to coat sharpened tools for long term protection. That material cooled to almost a plastic consistency, but could be peeled off when ready for use. Another thought - Cosmoline! If it's good enough for the government to preserve almost anything, should work for you.
